Sweden is a town on the western end of Monroe County. It was founded in 1814, a year after the state of New York mandated that a portion of land called the Triangle Tract should be split up into three towns: Sweden, Bergen, and Murray. The Triangle Tract had been part of a series of land measurements and purchases from the Iroquois after the Revolutionary War. The Town of Sweden also contains the Village of Brockport on its north end, which was incorporated in 1829. Today, the Town of Sweden is home to around 14,000 people and the Village of Brockport to around 8,000. The Erie Canal runs through the Village of Brockport. The canal was completed in 1825, giving the town a rich history of agriculture and urbanization. Today it has a historic downtown that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as tens of buildings that are also on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
